Dear God,
We think of some people
whose spirits we have never met,
whose hands we will never squeeze.
They look at us from our newspapers
and move before us on our tv screens.
They are across the sea
and in our living room.
We have nothing in common with them
apart from everything.
Your breath animates them like us
and now their breath is stopped...
theirs for good,
ours for a moment.
If there, why not here?
If them, why not us?
In this quiet is a sound
...the deafening crack in their interrupted lives.
This thought is for a miracle.
Turn our thinking into a prayer.
Make these thoughts make a difference.
Sit your big self down
next to those who are weeping,
listen to those who are angry.
Hold those about to break.
Kiss those who can't go on.
Show yourself to those who can see only nothing.
And chase down just
fast as your mercy.
This prayer is for two miracles:
turn our thoughts into prayer,
turn evil into good.
